Group Machiels generates green energy via biogas & CHP plants in Belgium

Group Machiels built a biogas & cogeneration plant (CHP) on the FarmFrites site (Lommel) in 2006. To this day, it is still very progressive and unique in its kind:

1) This is directly linked to FarmFrites, so the food waste is converted into green power in a carbon-neutral way through fermentation;

2) A CHP plant that independently generates electricity and steam, which is directly used in the production process;

3) The residual streams generated by the generation of electricity and steam are reused and upgraded to fertilisers and quality water.

This will result in (1) the annual generation of approximately 21.000 MWh of green energy by (2) processing 120,000 tonnes of residual flows, (3) saving 3,000 truck journeys, and (4) the purification of 80 million litres of water per year.

Since 2012, Green Logix has taken over the day-to-day operations and is working with Group Machiels on various renewable energy projects with the aim of making local industries energy neutral.

This plant and its cooperation are one of many examples of the ‘Closing the Circle’ story that Group Machiels promotes.
