MAC2

Activiteit

MAC2 was created in 2013 as a combination of the port activities of Group Machiels (Belgian Oil Services and Marpobel) and Maritime Antwerp Cleaning in the field of waste and residual flows from oceangoing and inland vessels and tank cleaning. MAC2 recycles oily waste products from the maritime and industrial sector so that they can be used as new raw materials. From the Port of Antwerp, MAC2 also serves Linkeroever and the ports of Zeebrugge and Ghent.

MAC2’s activities include:

  • Maritime waste collection and processing. All the expertise and processing facilities are in place to purify the waste water and recycle oils from it. Waste from Zeebrugge and Ghent is also processed here.

There are suitable containers and processing options for solid waste.

  • Processing of oil and water mixtures from industrial cleaning. The plant also accepts, processes, and recycles liquid waste collected by the industrial cleaners.
  • Cleaning tankers and tanks. In addition to the cleaning of oceangoing and inland navigation tankers and of storage tanks, MAC2 is an officially recognised cleaning station for tankers, containers, and railway wagons. For this purpose, the company has extensive facilities in the Vierde Havendok, centrally located in the port. MAC2 is connected to the Belgian rail network so that wagons can easily enter the site.
  • Degassing and inertisation of oceangoing and inland waterway tankers. Degassing involves removing chemical vapours when changing cargo. Inertisation involves applying a layer of nitrogen on top of flammable loads to prevent explosions.
  • Service quay and transhipment. MAC2 has more than 1,500 metres of service quay for ships with draughts of up to 8 metres. Transhipment from ship to ship or from ship to truck is also possible.
  • Ship supply. MAC2 provides transport of food and spare parts via the waterway to the vessel for oceangoing vessels that cannot be supplied from the shore.

Among other things, MAC2 has a fleet of seven vessels: three double-hulled tankers and one bilge boat, with a combined capacity of 2.200 tonnes for the transport of liquid residues, and three vessels for the supply of ships and spare parts. Specialised rolling stock is available for special assignments and to support the fleet.

No other company in Belgium offers the same integrated services for maritime transport. MAC2 combines these services with the protection of the maritime environment and the recycling of waste products, thus contributing to a more sustainable and circular economy.

Group Machiels’ baseline Closing the Circle is, quite rightly, also that of MAC2.
